Step by Step Guide - STCs

STCs can be created for eligible solar PV systems, solar hot water and heat pumps as well as small wind generation units and hydro.

The legal right to create certificates can only be assigned once, therefore if certificates are assigned  to Green Energy Trading, the same certificates cannot be assigned to another party.

Step by Step Guide - Solar PV

The number of certificates depends on;

  • System size
  • Location in Australia – click here for the Zone Table
  • For a PV system (under 100kW), 1, 5 or 15 years worth of  STCs can be deemed within 12 months of the system being installed
  • Eligible PV systems can receive a multiplied number of certificates for the first 1.5kW of installation. This is known as the Solar Credits

Although the paperwork can look daunting, the process is quite straightforward:

  1. Calculate the STCs you are eligible to create
  2. Work out the value of your STCs based on today’s price
  3. Complete the relevant PV Assignment Form using the PV Check List
  4. Obtain signatures in the correct sequence ie:  Owner, system inspection, installer
  5. Provide proof of installation - this can be Certificate of Compliance or Certificate of Electrical Safety
  6. Provide proof of purchase - the invoice for the system
  7. System owner or end consumer only. Provide proof of ownership - a rates notice or utility bill
  8. If Green Energy Trading is paying a business for a point of sale discount to the system owner then we'll also need an invoice to Green Energy Trading for the certificate value. Only include GST on the invoice if the stystem owner is registered for GST.

Important: STCs can only be created within 12 months of the system installation date and certificates can only be claimed AFTER the system has been installed.

Green Energy Trading will only accept forms if they are received, complete and correct one month prior to this expiry date. This is because it takes time to submit the certificates to the Clean Energy Regulator and ensure they are approved before the 12 month expiry.

Please note that for all paperwork received via email, Green Energy Trading will send a 'confirmation of receipt' email back to you within 24-48 hours, to confirm that we have successfully received your paperwork. If you do not receive this email, please call our friendly team on 03 9805 0700 to confirm receipt of paperwork.

Step by Step Guide - Solar Hot Water Systems and Heat Pumps

Although the paperwork can look daunting, the process is quite straightforward:

  1. Calculate the STCs your are eligible to create
  2. Work out the value of your STCs based on today’s price
  3. Complete the relevant SWH Assignment Form using the SWH Check List
  4. Obtain signatures in the correct sequence ie: Owner, installer
  5. Provide proof of installation - this needs to be the certificate of compliance

Solar water heater and heat pump installations in residential premises in Victoria might be eligible for Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates (VEECs), for more information please go to the VEEC FAQs.

The government introduced tighter requirements for Commercial Heat Pumps and Solar Water Heaters with a capacity greater than 700L. For further information please call the Green Energy Trading team on 1300 077 784.

Some additional government rebates may be available when installing a solar water heater or heat pump, however these vary in each state and do differ. We recommend you visit the appropriate local information links on the Rebate section of our Links Page.

STCs for Wind

Small wind systems are eligible for STCs if they have a kW rating of no more than 10kW and generate less than 25 MWh of electricity each year.  The deeming period can be either 1 or 5 years. Solar Credits can be applied to small wind systems for the first 1.5kW of installation.

To assign STCs for Wind, please download the Wind Assignment Form here.

Systems that are bigger than this have to register as a power station through the Clean Energy Regulator.
