Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels capture the sun's energy and convert it into electricity. Australia is one of the sunniest countries in the world, so the PV industry has the potential to play a significant role in reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.

RECs for PV systems

For a PV system 15 years worth of RECs can be created 'up front' on systems installed in the last 12 months, provided the system was installed by a BCSE accredited installer. If a PV system (under 100kW) was installed over 12 months ago but after November 2005 you are still eligible to claim RECs in 1 or 5 year blocks. If a PV system was installed prior to November 2005 but after 1 April 2001 then you can claim RECs in 1 or 5 year blocks as long as the system is under 10kW.

If the PV installation is an upgrade to an existing system RECs can be created, however additional information is required. This includes details on where the upgrade is located in relation to the existing system. Please include a written description and/or a diagram as well as photos where possible e.g. "the four new panels are located to the right hand side on the north facing roof".

When more than one system is installed at the same address further information is also required, that is a diagram or description of where the system and associated serial numbers are located e.g.  “a system with serial number X is installed at the rear of the house and the system with serial number Y is installed on level 1 of the main building”. The description needs to link the serial number to each system and explain exactly where each system is located.
